POEM FLOWERS

Zinnia Memories

Zinnias of my youth

Lined dry sandy driveway

Stood tall, straight

Against all weather

Zinnias of my youth,

Lost in adulthood

Old fashion reminders,

Replaced, by new fashionable

Flowers reflecting modern

Home of the future.

Then, one day the flowers

Of my youth were rediscover

On the path of discarding trash.

Three scattered beauties

Stood strong and straight

In untended rocky dry soil.

I carefully, dug each one

And planted near my house

Three happy Zinnia plants

Multiplied into an area of beauty,

Suppling sweet honey fragrance

That no butterfly could resist,

Or I, drinking in their beauty

Creating memories of my youth

Once again, I felt youthful.

In this 2018 edition of Encore, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies presents the top 150 prize-winning poems selected from nearly 7,000 submissions from states across the U.S., as well as the United Kingdom and Canada. The 50 contests challenged authors to write in many poetic forms, such as rondeau, trimeric, terza rima sonnet, minute, and villanelle. They also provoked fresh, personal interpretations of wide-ranging themes. The 2018 anthology is a collection to savor.

Dear OWLs, 

The Ozarks Writers League Board of Directors includes four officer positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. 

The bylaws state that no one can serve more than two consecutive terms in an officer's position. That means that both our President and Treasurer will not be able to serve another term as an officer.

We need a Nominating Committee to seek out next year's officers. If you would like to serve as an officer or would like to at least serve on the Nominating Committee. 

OWL's future depends on every member supporting the organization. We are all volunteers.

Hi All:

On Sunday, April 8, 2018 Mary Nida Smith (author of HEROES BENEATH the WAVES) and I will be on our Tucson radio station KVOI, AM 1030, a Salem Radio Network station, noon local time.  We do not go to "Savings Time" here so it is equivalent to noon Pacific Daylight Time.  There is no top-of-the-hour news so tune in early.

We will be celebrating April 11th's 118 year birthday of our U.S. Submarine Service.

Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI-AR)

The Arkansas Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) Conference is June 22-23 in Central Arkansas.
Conference faculty includes Sarah Jane Abbott, assistant editor at Paula Wiseman Books and Beach Lane Books (Simon & Schuster); Jessica Anderson, assistant editor at Christy Ottaviano Books (Henry Holt & Company, an imprint of Macmillan Children's Group); and Natascha Morris, literary agent at BookEnds Literary Agency.
The conference will offer a dinner, genre meetings and pitch sessions on June 22 (North Little Rock Community Center, North Little Rock). Conference sessions, lunch and critiques are on June 23 (Butler Center, Little Rock).
Opportunities are available for writers and artists to receive feedback on their manuscripts and portfolios. Remember that spaces for consultations are limited, so sign up early if you want to secure a spot.

Village Writing School Linda Apple

Linda Apple will present a workshop called “Writing from your Soul” on Saturday,  January 20, from  9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Village Writing School, Rogers.

During the morning session, “From Any Worldview”, participants will learn what inspirational writing is, what it isn’t, how to find their story, and how to write it in a way that connects with their readers.

Jerry arranged for us to have a guided tour of the Naval Undersea Museum which was so chock full of information and items from submarines that we couldn’t fit it all in with the few hours we had there. In the gift shop at the museum, Jerry Foss and Joel Greenberg had authored a section in a submarine book titled: “Heroes Beneath the Waves” so we bought copies and had Jerry autograph them for us. AUTHOR DUSTY RICHARDS UPDATE

This is the latest update I’ve heard regarding Dusty and Pat Richards. They are both still in the hospital and have a long road of rehabilitation in front of them. Dusty is off the ventilator, awake, and trying to talk, but is unintelligible at this time. Pat is off the ventilator, but is paralyzed from the waist down. You can send cards to P. O.
